Bertram, Brown, Carr, Roberts, & Watterson Selected as 2021 Gay Brewer, Jr. Grant Recipients

LOUISVILLE, KY (May 13, 2021) – Micah Bertram, Macey Brown, William Carr, Cameron Roberts, and Zach Watterson have been selected as the recipients of the 2021 Gay Brewer, Jr. Grant. One of the key initiatives of the Kentucky Golf Foundation, this grant awards each golfer and their families with $1,000 for the purpose of mitigating costs junior golfers and their families encounter at prestigious golf tournaments across the country.

Micah Bertram just completed his sophomore year at Ballard High School in Louisville and is a member of their Boys Golf team. A competitor of multiple years on the Kentucky PGA Junior Tour, Bertram’s level of play has steadily increased each year. Last year, he recorded a T10 finish in the Kentucky Boys Junior Amateur at Boone’s Trace National Golf Club, which featured one of the strongest fields in Kentucky Junior Golf last year. With this grant, Bertram and his family will use it in tournaments such as AJGA events to help make his dream of playing college golf come true.

“I am really honored to receive the Gay Brewer, Jr. Grant,” Bertram explained. “I am looking forward to being able to use these funds to play more tournaments this summer here in Kentucky, but also in other parts of the country, and be able to gain more competitive experience. I hope that I will bring honor to Gay Brewer, Jr.’s legacy and to my home state of Kentucky.”

Macey Brown captured the KHSAA Girls State Championship this past October at Bowling Green Country Club, fully establishing her as one of Kentucky’s top young players right now. Having just completed her junior year at Apollo High School, the Owensboro resident is determined to have another strong season in 2021 and turn that into an opportunity to play college golf.

“I’m so thankful to receive the Gay Brewer, Jr. Grant,” Brown described. “With this grant I will be able to play in more high-level tournaments and prepare myself for golf during college.”

William Carr is a Danville resident and will be entering his senior year at Boyle County High School later this year. A multi-sport athlete with success in golf, baseball and basketball, Carr has been lauded as one of the hardest workers and most determined student-athletes by the BCHS community. With the Gay Brewer, Jr. Grant, he and his family hope to be involved in as many junior golf tournaments as possible this summer in order for Carr to earn the opportunity to play college golf.

“The Gay Brewer, Jr. Grant will go a long way in helping with expenses this summer as I work to get as much tournament experience as possible before my senior year,” Carr said. “I’m very grateful to have been selected.”

Cameron Roberts is from Robinson Creek and will be a freshman at Pikeville High School this August. Being from eastern Kentucky, long travel hours to reach golf tournaments and other sporting events has been a constant theme for Roberts’ career as a young athlete. In order to continue his improvement as a young golfer, Roberts has worked as a mower at a local golf course early in the morning in recent summers to help cover green fees and tournament registrations fees.

“I am very honored and appreciative to have received the Gay Brewer, Jr. Grant,” Roberts exclaimed. “I know this will allow me to compete in more tournaments throughout the summer and get closer to my personal goals in golf. It is a blessing to me and my family. I would like to thank the Brewer family and committee for this opportunity.”

Beattyville’s Zach Watterson just wrapped up his sophomore year of high school at Lee County and has a busy summer ahead of him with hopes to play in tournaments in Atlanta, Durham, Pinehurst, and Roanoke among other locations. As Watterson works to continue his goal of playing golf at the collegiate level, this opportunity will be most helpful in reaching that aspiration; especially with a brother who is currently attending college and a sister who is planning a wedding this summer.

“I would like to thank the Gay Brewer, Jr. family and committee for their generosity and commitment to junior golf,” Watterson proclaimed. “Their support as I continue toward my goal of playing college golf will allow me to compete on a regional level in very competitive tournaments. Again, I cannot thank them enough and am honored to receive this grant.”

The Kentucky Golf Foundation congratulates Micah, Macey, William, Cameron, and Zach along with each of their families on these well-deserved honors. In addition, the KGF extends its appreciation towards the Brewer family, namely Alma Jo McGuire for chairing the committee and continuing to impact Kentucky Junior Golf through the support of this grant.
