Delia Gibbs Snags Kentucky Girls Junior Amateur
GEORGETOWN, KY (July 17, 2020) – Delia Gibbs is a major champion on the Kentucky PGA Junior Tour. An up and down final round at Cherry Blossom Golf & Country Club for her on Friday earned her the Kentucky Girls Junior Amateur by one stroke over Savannah Howell. It was a final round 72 (E) for Gibbs, giving her a two-day total of 146 (+2).
The Lexington lady got off to a less than ideal start by making a bogey and double bogey on her first two holes, but Gibbs never gave up and had a ten-hole stretch from 5-14 which she played in five under par. That blazing trail elevated her to the top of the leaderboard which she would not relinquish. Howell, who had as many pars on her front nine as Gibbs did in her entire round, played the steadier round of the two and made a late charge with birdies on both back nine par-fives. Gibbs had a slight scare on the final hole where she made double bogey on the par-four 18th, but the mistake did not cost her and she hung on for the one-stroke victory.
Seven other divisions awarded champions on Friday, with these players notching victory:
- Madison Harding takes the 16-18 Division with a total score of 171 (+27).
- Cailyn Rogers wins the 13-15 Division by one stroke over Carter Lankford via a score of 150 (+6).
- Willa Borough emerged victorious in a playoff in the 12 & Under Division, edging out Andie Baumann. Borough overcame an eight-stroke deficit to come back to win, propelled by a great round of 37 (+1) on Friday.
- Emlie Miller picks up her latest win on Tour in impressive fashion once more. The Mayfield youngster finished her tournament at 63 (+15).
- Luc Kelty heads the male winners by claiming the 11-12 Division with a total score of 77 (+5).
- Andrew Perry won the 10 & Under Division by four strokes via a final tally of 79 (+7).
- Rounding out the tournament’s winners, Paxton Fuqua emerged a seven-shot victor in the 8 & Under Division with a decisive seven-stroke win.
NOTES AND STATS
- In the Girls Championship Division, Gibbs was one of three players to shoot 72 which was the low round of the day and the tournament. Faith Martin who finished in third place and Addie Westbrook in seventh place matched that number on Friday.
- The 5th was once more the easiest hole on the golf course. Today it played at a stroke-to-par average of +0.12 compared to Thursday’s -0.04.
- The par-three 2nd and par-four 10th co-share honors of being the final round’s hardest hole. Combined, only three birdies were recorded on these two holes during Friday’s play as they each played +0.75.
