Marshall County Girls and Madison Central Boys Take All-State Team Championships

LEXINGTON, KY (September 20, 2020) – Late drama lacked in the final round of the U.S Open as Bryson DeChambeau ran away with his first major title, but there was plenty of exciting golf to be found down the stretch in Sunday’s KGCA All-State Championship. Student-athletes from across Kentucky came to University Club of Kentucky for one of the premier competitions in high school athletics for the Commonwealth. Four key titles were won on the last Sunday of summer that showcased some of Kentucky’s finest high school golfers.

The ladies of Marshall County High School dominated the girls’ team competition to the tune of a 32-stroke margin of victory. The team of Trinity Beth, Savannah Howell, Megan Hertter, Katie Roberts, and Elsie Riley was unstoppable throughout the weekend as they won the team competition of this event for the first time. South Warren High School and Lexington Christian Academy finished in a tie for second place.

Macie Brown came from behind to win the girls’ individual title by one stroke over Trinity Beth. Brown shot a bogey-free 70 (-2) on Big Blue today to complete the comeback and overtake Beth. Beth shot 73 (+1) on Sunday but was impacted severely by a double bogey on the final hole that proved to be pivotal in the tournament’s outcome.

In a competition that came down to the final hole of the final player, Madison Central High School came away victorious in the boys’ team competition with a one-stroke victory over Trinity High School. It was a massive comeback for the gentlemen of Madison Central, as Cooper Eberle, Clay Pendergrass, Warren Thomis, Gavin McKune, and Bryce Snapp erased an eleven-shot deficit after the first round to leave Lexington on top. After their squad totaled 301 on Saturday, a huge Sunday turnaround in the form of 288 shot them up the leaderboard and earned them the title.

Rylan Wotherspoon of Cooper High School made a big statement by winning the individual competition for boys. His one-stroke lead after the first round blossomed into an eventual two-stroke victory with rounds of 69-71 giving him a 140 (-3) winning total. Jackson Finney and Jay Nimmo finished in a tie for second place.

The Kentucky PGA Junior Tour and the KGCA would like to thank each team and player who competed in this week’s competition, along with the University Club of Kentucky for hosting the tournament for a second straight year. This year’s KGCA Hall of Fame induction class was honored during the day and a video will be available within the next few days to watch the individuals receive their honors.
