Previewing the Kentucky Boys Junior Amateur

RICHMOND, KY (July 7, 2020) – For the second consecutive week, the Commonwealth’s male junior golfers are poised for a major championship on the Kentucky PGA Junior Tour in Richmond. The Kentucky Boys Junior Amateur will tee off tomorrow morning at Boone’s Trace National Golf Club as players vie for a crown jewel in the junior game along with an exemption into the 2021 Barbasol Junior Championship.

One of the strongest fields in tournament history has assembled with 90 players in the Championship Division and 128 players overall competing. Defending champion Jansen Preston is not in the field, nor is last week’s Kentucky Boys Junior PGA Champion Warren Thomis, but a star-studded lineup of Kentucky Junior Golf will do battle to crown a champion.

  • Jay Nimmo (8:00 a.m. EDT) – The Mississippi State commit has accomplished a great deal in his career, but this Championship is one of the few accolades that has alluded him to this point. Nimmo will graduate high school next May so this year presents one of two remaining chances for him to nab this title.
  • Benny Haggin (8:00) – Joining Nimmo in the first group out, last week’s runner-up to Warren Thomis at Gibson Bay looks to do one spot better this week. Haggin finished in a tie for fifth place at this tournament last year at Bardstown Country Club.
  • Colten Wilson (9:00) – The recipient of a Gay Brewer, Jr. Grant this spring, Wilson started his season off well last week at Gibson Bay thanks to finishing in a tie for fourth place. A final round of 70 (-2) bodes well for his momentum entering this week.
  • Luke Coyle (9:40) – The young star of Campbellsville finished runner-up to Preston last year in Bardstown before a world-class autumn that saw him earn a spot in the Drive Chip & Putt National Finals at Augusta National (which will now happen in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), finish in third place at the KGCA All-State Championship, along with earning a sixth place finish in the KHSAA State Championship.
  • Cayden Pope (10:30) – Having already verbally committed to play golf at Auburn following his high school graduation in 2023, the young product of Lexington could be primed to secure a cornerstone title this week. Pope finished in a tie for eighth place in last year’s edition of the Kentucky Boys Junior Amateur.
  • Matthew Troutman (10:40) – A competitor at the 2019 Drive Chip & Putt National Finals, one of Louisville’s most well-known young athletes hopes to claim what might be his most significant accomplishment to date by winning this week in Richmond.
  • Drew Wallace (11:00) – Wallace won the Justin Thomas Grant and aforementioned Gay Brewer, Jr. Grant in the spring and looks to make his first Kentucky PGA Junior Tour start of 2020 his latest news-worthy achievement in golf. This will be Wallace’s first time competing in the Kentucky Boys Junior Amateur.
