Smith and Thomis share lead in Simpsonville after matching rounds of 67 (-5).

SIMPSONVILLE, KY (July 11, 2022) – The 10:00 group off the 1st hole at University of Louisville Golf Club was circled going into the Kentucky Boys Junior Amateur as one to watch. Containing Brady Smith, Warren Thomis and Luke Coyle, each of whom entered as a contender to win, the three players totaled 204 strokes (-12) between them with some phenomenal golf to behold. Smith and Thomis went shot for shot with one another, as rounds of 67 (-5) give them a share of the lead going into Tuesday’s final round.

Smith, playing at his home course, was as low as -6 at one point while Thomis was bogey-free throughout his endeavor. Sunny Pal holds solo third after a round of 69 (-3) with four birdies gracing his scorecard. Pal will join Smith and Thomis in the final group on Tuesday with 2:45 p.m. EDT being their tee time.

Coyle is one of three players in a tie for fourth, with Clay Pendergrass and Bradford Lacefield joining him after all shot rounds of 70 (-2). Seven other players broke par in the Boys 16-18 Division, meaning an impressive mark of thirteen players were in red numbers on Monday. All of whom are within four strokes of the lead, well within striking distance of this prestigious championship.

The Boys 13-15 Division is also taking place at University of Louisville Golf Club where Colton Woosley is the halfway leader thanks to being the only player from the group to break par. His round of 71 (-1) puts him up a stroke over Jacob Holzer. Landon Stillwell and Jaxson Malone are tied for third and two strokes back of Woosley.

NOTES & STATS

• There were two eagles made during the first round. One came on the par-five 9th from Nicholas Osborne while Trey Wall earned one on the par-five 17th.
• The par-four 14th was the toughest hole of the day and it came in the middle of a difficult stretch. Holes 13-15 all ranked as the three hardest holes for round one with the 14th topping the bunch with a stroke-to-par average of +0.77.
• The par-four 2nd was the easiest hole at +0.18. It had eighteen birdies, the most from any hole that isn’t a par-five.
• Not surprisingly given the difficulty of holes 13-15, the front nine was much easier to score on than the back. A full stroke separated the nines with 39.53 (+3.53) being the average on holes 1-9 compared to 40.53 (+4.53) for holes 10-18.
